Republication of “Unequal Cities of Spectacle and Mega-events in China” in French

Pleased to confirm that a paper of mine, entitled Unequal Cities of Spectacle and Mega-events in China and originally published in 2012 from the journal CITY, is going to be republished in French from the journal Alternatives Sud (AS) in March 2016. The republication is part of the journal’s themed issue onย globalisation of sport, ย with a focus on mega-events and their implications on developing/emergings countries and populations.

The journal Alternatives Sud is part of the activities by the Centre tricontinental (CETRI), a progressive research centre founded in 1976 in Belgium. According to the centre, it now aims to:

“promote a better understanding of the North-South/South-South relations and problems and to contribute to critical analysis of the dominant concepts and practices of development in the context of the neo-liberal globalisation. It is particularly supportive of understanding and discussing the role of social and political actors in the South who are fighting for the recognition of social, political, cultural and environmental rights.”

If you are interested in reading the full paper, you may visit the journal’s web site or here.

Gentrification Seminars in Seoul, 2-22 December 2015, Seoul National University

In December 2015, I will be leading a series of seminars in Seoul on gentrification. This is to take place at Asia Centre, Seoul National University once a week and starting on 2 December. Gentrification has recently become a social and politically hot topic in Seoul, having seen frequent media coverage from late last year and politicians producing various policy proposals in recent weeks to address displacement of original residents and in particular small businesses who are being driven away due to hiking rents. All those in Seoul and interested in the topic are welcome. Please be reminded that the sessions will be run in Korean though.

Below is the seminar poster and the seminar introduction in Korean along with the weekly programme and readings:

Vacancy: Postdoctoral Fellow in Urban Studies at City University of Hong Kong

The Urban Research Group at the Department of Public Policy is recruiting a new postdoctoral fellow in urban studies, to start from 1 March 2016. This is an exciting group that has attracted strong post-doc researchers, one of whom was Dr Sin Yee Koh who completed her PhD in my department (I was her review supervisor). Sin Yee is now an assistant professor at the Institute of Asian Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.ย Their current postdoctoral fellow is Dr Julie Ren, another excellent researcher whose PhD thesis (I was her external examiner) was a great comparative study of art spaces in Berlin and Beijing. They are looking for someone to work on their on-going projects on everyday life and China’s urbanisation.

Joining the editorial board of the journal China City Planning Review

This is the editorial department of the journal of China City Planning Review (CCPR). We are glad to inform you that your nomination as a member of ย the Editorial Board of CCPR has been approved by the Urban Planning Society of China at the 3rd Meeting of the 2nd Editorial Board Committee of CCPR. Your name will be added to the list of Editorial Board Members on the third cover page from December this year.

Above message has arrived at my inbox a couple of days ago, and I am happy to be joining the editorial board of the journal. According to its web site http://www.ccprjournal.com.cn, which also seems to have been redesigned recently,ย it publicises itself as “one and only professional and academic English periodical in the area of urban planning and design”. The journal is “publishedย by the Urban Planning Society of China, in cooperation with Center for Human Settlements of Tsinghua University, School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, and Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Planning & Design Institute.” I look forward to working closely with other colleagues from and outside China who are part of the journal in the coming years.
